    Tricone Drill Bit Wear Classification Standards and Wear Analysis

    International Contractor Association Wear Classification Standards  

    The International Contractor Association classifies drill bit wear into three categories: tooth wear, bearing wear, and bit diameter reduction, with specific standards set for each category. These classifications apply to various types of tricone Drill Bits, including insert tooth drill bits, milled tooth triCone Bits, used in oil, gas, and water well drilling.

       ①Tooth Wear Classification Standard  

       Tooth wear is classified into 8 levels, with different classification standards for milled teeth and insert teeth. For milled tooth tricone bits, the classification is based on the height of wear. If the wear height is within 1/8 of the tooth height, it is classified as Level 1. If the wear height is between 1/8 and 2/8 of the tooth height, it is Level 2, and so on up to Level 8. This standard is particularly relevant for milled tooth tricone bits and drag bits used in soft formations.  

       For tungsten carbide insert teeth, classification is based on the ratio of the number of broken or lost teeth to the total number of teeth. If the number of broken or lost teeth is within 1/8 of the total, it is classified as Level 1. If the number of broken or lost teeth is between 1/8 and 2/8 of the total, it is Level 2, and so on up to Level 8. This applies to Tungsten Carbide Tricone Drill Bit and other insert tooth designs.  

       Tooth wear is denoted by "T", with T1 representing Level 1 wear, T2 representing Level 2 wear, and so on.

       ② Bearing Wear Classification Standard

       Bearing wear is classified based on the ratio of the bit's usage time to the bearing's total life (in hours), with 8 levels of classification. For all types of tricone rotary drill bits, including water well drilling bits and tricone rock bits, if the usage time reaches 1/8 of the bearing life, it is classified as Level 1. If the usage time reaches 2/8 of the bearing life, it is Level 2, and so on up to Level 8. When the usage time falls between two levels, the higher level is assigned.  

       Bearing wear is denoted by "B", with B1 indicating that 1/8 of the bearing life has been used, B2 indicating 2/8, and so on. For sealed bearings, the sealing condition is classified into three levels:  

       - SE (Sealing Effective)  

       - SF (Sealing Ineffective)  

       - SQ (Sealing Problematic)  

       These classifications are especially important for TCI drill bits and other high-performance tricone rock bits.

       ③Bit Diameter Wear Representation

       To indicate the wear on the bit's diameter, "1" represents that the bit retains its original diameter, while "0" indicates that the diameter has been reduced. The amount of diameter reduction is expressed in inches after the "0". For example, "01/2" means the bit's diameter has been reduced by 1/2 inch. This is crucial for maintaining optimal drilling efficiency in various applications, including oil, gas, and water well drilling.
